Inspired by a childhood spent on the beaches of Cornwall building castles, boats and tunnels in the sand, I decided to return to my favourite beach at Caerhays on the south coast of Cornwall to produce a stool using a primitive form of sand-casting. Molten pewter was poured into a sand mould sculpted directly into the beach by hand, and once cooled the sand was dug away to reveal a pewter stool.

Background
What if we could save money, radically reduce our environmental impact, and have a freer, less complicated life?
Treehugger founder Graham Hill has part of the answer: we need to have less stuff and live in smaller spaces, like the 420sf (~39 m2) apartment he will renovate in 2011. With some design and technology magic, we think 420 square feet can allow for working at home, space for 2 guests to stay over, a sit-down dinner for 12, lounge space for 8, and maybe even a steam room.
So we’re asking you to redesign a small space thinking about these core ideas:
- transforming space - use one space for work, play, sleep, guests
- digitize everything - photos, books, music
- from ownership to access - think Netflix, Zipcar, Airbnb, etc.
- only the essentials - cut down on extraneous stuff, leaving only what’s really necessary
The winning concept will be used in a renovation of a 420sf apartment in New York City in mid 2011. Ideas will remain online as reference, to inspire and encourage others to rethink how they buy, rent, renovate and furnish their future properties.
Modern Pictograms is a typeface made for interface designers and programmers. Designed to work on-screen at sizes down to 18 pixels. Install the OpenType file for Photoshop mockups and drop in the @font-face code into your CSS to use right in your Web page. We’re offering it free, but donations accepted.
The font is licensed with Open Font License. In short, you can’t resell it as is, but you can incorporate it into your work and make a profit on that.
Custom software is changing typography, photography, and composition and is the foundation for new categories of design practice that includes design for networked media (web browsers, mobile phones, tablets) and interactive installations. Most importantly, designers writing software are pushing design thinking into new areas. To cut to the core of the matter, we asked a group of exceptional designers two deceptively simple questions:
1. Why do you write your own software rather than only use existing software tools?
2. How does writing your own software affect your design process and also the visual qualities of the final work?

Braun Porn … or, before Apple, the brand associated with gorgeous design in the 60s was Braun. I think it is fair to say that the original iPod was inspired by Braun portable radios.

IkeaHackers.net is a site about modifications on and repurposing of Ikea products. Hacks, as we call it here, may be as simple as adding an embellishment, some others may require power tools and lots of ingenuity.
Osso is a new series of chairs designed by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec for the Italian brand Mattiazzi. The chairs are made of oak, maple or ash, but it’s their production process that I find interesting. The pieces are milled by a digitally controlled CNC machine. This is probably one of the few ways to produce this design on a larger scale.
