a data structure that relies on hash functions for representing a set. The actual structure is a bunch of bits and a few hash functions. To add an element to a Bloom filter, compute the hashes for each hash function, and set each bit high. To test if an element has been added to the Bloom filter, compute the hashes and return true if all the bits are already high.

Type designers and Web designers have reached a consensus on a format specification for embedding fonts on the Web. Mozilla is already including support for the font format in Firefox 3.6, and wide adoption could come sooner than many expected.

The latest draft of the WOFF File Format specification is online.

You can now download an official beta of Firefox 3.6, with support for WOFF fonts, from Mozilla’s developer site.

Typographer Erik Spiekermann has put together a sample page that uses a WOFF version of the popular typeface FF Meta. You’ll need the aforementioned beta of FF3.6 to view the custom fonts.

Mozilla’s John Dagget and Jonathan Kew have a post with several examples of more advanced typography generated using CSS properties at Mozilla Hacks.

We have an introduction to @font-face and related CSS technology for those looking for more background, as well as a look at some of the issues that prompted solutions like TypeKit and ultimately WOFF.

Accelerating future: Answering Popular Science’s 10 Questions on the Singularity

Upptäckte precis bloggen Accelerating future (“Transhumanism, AI, nanotechnology, and extinction risk.”). Den verkar väldigt bra, det inlägget jag fastnade för först var Answering Popular Science’s 10 Questions on the Singularity. Långt, intressant och stundtals roligt. I den posten så länkar Michael till vidare läsning, bland annat Knowability of Friendly AI som var väldigt fin läsning, och en artikel om Basic AI drives.

Några sköna citat ur Singularity-texten:

This is because we think of “machines” as things like toasters. We have no experience with machines as complex and subtle as the human mind, but because the human mind is entirely non-magical, it’s only a matter of time. You are still special even though your mind is non-magical — don’t worry.

…

The author of the article writes, “Are the Id, Ego, and other elements of our unconscious the consequence of biology or a necessary component of sentience?”, in a shocking mention of Freudian psychology. Freudian psychology is not scientific… why is someone in Popular Science referring to it as fact? Has Popular Science lost it? Maybe they don’t really mean it, but seriously, drop the Freud references.
